In math we continue to practice adding and subtracting within 10. The students learnt to complete to 10. They also briefly revised shapes: rectangle, square, triangle and circle. They also learnt to classify objects and find a common area of 2 groups.
In science we memorized basic terms related to inquiry skills: measuring, classifying, communicating, sequencing. They learnt to classify objects and communicate results with a bar graph.
In Language arts we continued with our Jolly phonics and completed the sounds of book 3. G O U L F B. We practiced blending sounds and reading short words with 2-3 letters.
This week we finished memorizing the times table up to 9. The students practiced multiplication and division as reversed actions and solved multiplication and division word problems. They also learnt a method to multiply by 9 with their fingers and briefly revised even and odd numbers.
In Language arts we discussed common and proper nouns. We read our anchor text fiction text called Building a New Barn and compared and contrasted main characters. We also read a nonfiction text and identified real facts we learned about bridges. As always we had a weekly vocabulary and spelling test.
In science we read our chapter on various science tools that scientists use to conduct experiments and have precise results. We discussed their names and purposes.
Here is what we did last week:
English: We studied the difference in use of ARE, WERE and IS, WAS; we also read and discussed a text about the Moon, followed by a video on astronauts’ job. We looked for the main ideas and details of the text. Spelling words for this Wednesday: saw, law, raw, straw, draw, country, ocean, title, motion, change.
Math: We looked at odd and even numbers and learnt how to recognize whether a 2 or 3 digit number is even or odd. Also, we revised doubles and near doubles (double +1, +2, -1, -2).
Science: The kids revised animals needs and special features of each animals group.
This week I introduced the sound “t”. We practiced writing the sound, and made a poster with pictures of words starting with the sound “t”.
We also revised the numbers to 6, matching numbers with amount of dots, counting animals, making a simple bar graph, playing with dice.
We talked about our senses, and about visually-impaired people (we watched 2 short films about how blind people use a cane, and guide dogs). Through a game the children were briefly introduced to the world of visually-impaired people (see photo below), and were invited to express their thoughts and feelings about this exercise.
We also learned to play skittles!
This week in English we had a spelling and vocabulary test. We read a realistic fiction story where we focused on the characters, setting, and plot of the story. We also read an informational text.
This week in science we talked about planning an investigation, the scientific method, and inquiry skills.
We have started a new chapter. Students were learning place & values of a number up to hundred million. They were learning to write numbers in words and also to write numbers in standard form. Students were also learning to round numbers to the nearest 10s’, 100s’ and 1000s’.
