Grade 3 – Oct 22-26

Dear parents and children,

Another week, more good news! Grade 3 have (unofficially yet) won the Cleanest Classroom contest! Yoo hoo!! As a reward, the students will have to continue keeping their classroom clean¬†ūüėä and will get to play games provided by Mr. Norbert.
We have also decorated our door with funny monsters for another Halloween contest – I do not know if we stand a chance at winning since all the doors are very cute and scary¬†ūüėÉ

In cooperation with the¬†Grade 3 Art teachers we have also¬†prepared scary but also funny characters – my students have written funny lines for skeletons, witches, spiders and black cats and all the children in our school (grades 1-4) will get to vote for the funniest comics. On Wednesday we’ll count and tally the response and decide on the winning most popular¬†project. All my students loved the idea and¬† put a lot of work and creativity into this assignment.

We’re fast approaching our second Unit Math test – we are being challenged a little bit by some¬†two step word problems but I am very happy with everyone’s progress and hard work!

In Language Arts we’re focusing on writing complete, longer sentences, using capital letters¬†when needed and we’ve even written our work during ICT – we’re learning how to edit text and practicing typing. We are discussing biographies, non-fiction stories and are spelling words with short vowel sounds.

On Wednesday, we will magically transform a big Pumpkin into a Jack-o-lantern in the morning, but my students will have PE before the party which will be starting at around noon.

Have a great weekend and see you soon at our parents-teachers conferences¬†ūüėä

Language Arts

In Language Arts this week we read 2 folktales. One was about a Tortoise and one was about a Rabbit. We discussed the moral of each folk tale and what the animals learned. We also focused on the characters in each story and identified their inside traits and outside traits. We found evidence from the story to support each. In grammar we practiced subject-verb agreement in sentences.

Math

In math we revised 2 steps of addition over 10 – first completing to 10, then adding the rest. We also continue solving complex word problems.

Science

In science we talked about how technology can affect the environment in a good and a bad way, we also discussed how to use technology safely. Then we revised the chapter. We also talked about the life of bats.

Language Arts

This week in LA we had our first spelling test! We also started to work in our Journey’s books since we have finished our Jolly Phonics Review. We read a nonfiction text about friendship and wrote about what it means to be a friend. We also read some poems discussing friendship and discussed rhyme. We learned about nouns and the different categories they identify (places, things, animals, and people)

Science

In science we began to discuss different materials that appear in the world around us. We learned about various materials that come from nature and those that are man made. We practiced sorting different objects from the classroom into categories of natural and human-made materials.

Math

In math we continue finding partners in addition within 10. We also practiced that in a form of several Halloween themed games.
