Grade 2 News

Language Arts

In Language Arts this week we read 2 folktales. One was about a Tortoise and one was about a Rabbit. We discussed the moral of each folk tale and what the animals learned. We also focused on the characters in each story and identified their inside traits and outside traits. We found evidence from the story to support each. In grammar we practiced subject-verb agreement in sentences.

Math

In math we revised 2 steps of addition over 10 – first completing to 10, then adding the rest. We also continue solving complex word problems.

Science

In science we talked about how technology can affect the environment in a good and a bad way, we also discussed how to use technology safely. Then we revised the chapter. We also talked about the life of bats.

Language Arts

This week in LA we had our first spelling test! We also started to work in our Journey’s books since we have finished our Jolly Phonics Review. We read a nonfiction text about friendship and wrote about what it means to be a friend. We also read some poems discussing friendship and discussed rhyme. We learned about nouns and the different categories they identify (places, things, animals, and people)

Science

In science we began to discuss different materials that appear in the world around us. We learned about various materials that come from nature and those that are man made. We practiced sorting different objects from the classroom into categories of natural and human-made materials.

Math

In math we continue finding partners in addition within 10. We also practiced that in a form of several Halloween themed games.

Kindergarten week 7

Kindergarten week 7

Last week the kindergarten children learned the sound “p”. We also started blending sounds to make short words (sit, sat, it, is, at, pat, tap). In maths we are working on sums to 5, using different techniques (blocks, fingers, counting lines, mental maths etc.). We talked about autumn treasures (leaves, weather, Halloween). We learned the song Insey Winsey spider. We have adopted a little snail that we feed and observe. We are working on a collective project to decorate our door. We also talked about teeth, brushing teeth and going to the dentist. We are doing exercises with our fingers to improve our fine motor skills. Most children are healthy, and well dressed for the weather. Next week we will celebrate Halloween, please have a costume for your child (doesn’t have to be anything fancy). I will also do face-painting.

Grade 3 Week Oct 15-19

Grade 3 Week Oct 15-19

Hi there!

Another week has passed 🙂 On Monday we celebrated Teachers’ Day with an assembly (songs, poems prepare by our students) and with a lot of chocolate!

We had another assembly on Friday to talk about Copernicus and his discoveries that removed Earth from the centre of the Universe and declaring the Sun the star around which all planets in our Solar System wander. Grade 1 students delighted us with a little show demonstrating just that! We encourage all students to be knowledgeable (Learners’ profile) just as Copernicus was in his time! It was a great opportunity for us to learn more about the planets, stars, Earth and the Moon in Science.

In Math we have learned about tables (of multiplication) and all the students understood how to complete the factors and products missing in them. Dealing with word problems, my students had to choose the type of problem in order to find the right answer and also enjoyed writing their own problems!

In Social Studies we’ve had our first Unit Test and moved on to Unit 2 – Our Environment – we’ll briefly come back to it when we’ll celebrate Earth Day in April!

In Language Arts we learned about common and proper nouns and how to write short stories. Their first assignment – writing a quick description of their morning 🙂

Next week we start getting ready for Halloween by decorating our classrooms and having a lot of fun!

This week we finished reading “The Legend of Pecos Bill” and continued learning about tall tales. We also read a folktale,  “The Empty Pot,” which comes from China and teaches readers that being honest helps you gain more than cheating. We also learned about proper and common nouns. Finally, we had a spelling and vocabulary test on Friday.

Math

This week we had a quiz finishing our work with Unit 2 and we began learning to add whole numbers with more than four digits.

Science

This week, due to our field trip to Chopin Point and having guests from Germany visit our school, we only had one Science lesson and on it we revised our knowledge from Unit 1.

Other 🙂

This week on Monday, we went on a field trip to Chopin Point to learn about Frédéric Chopin and meet students from Germany. We listened to them play music composed by Chopin and in return we welcomed them to our school on Wednesday. Pictures from both events will be available in the Photo Gallery 🙂
