Language Arts: This week we focused on inflectional endings in past and present tense. -ed and -ing.
Math: In math we are focusing on data collection in reading and making picture and bar graphs. For one graph we had to fill in how many people were right or left handed and learned that everyone in our class is right handed!
Science: In science we continued our unit on objects in the sky. We compared and contrasted day and night skies. We talked about moon phases and how the earth moves. We did an experiment to see how our shadows change from the morning to the afternoon! It was a big difference!
This week 3rd grade had a revision of fractions, word problems with fractions, adding and subtracting fractions of the same denominator and they wrote a test which turned out very well! At the end of the week they learnt a method for dividing big numbers.
This week we had homophone spelling words. We worked on learning the definitions of these words, because it’s important for learning how to spell them. Students had a spelling test, as well as a vocabulary test on these words on Friday. We also worked on comprehension, We continued our read aloud of the book The Boxcar Children.
For international Day, we will be performing a play about the Rainforest. All of the students will be animals from the rainforest. This week students researched the animal that will be their animal in the performance. Every student gave a short oral presentation about their animal during class.
In math we finished the money problems and got back to revising time. The students showed the given times on analog clocks and digital clocks, they also solved some problems with the passing time, for ex. 3 hours later, 5 hours earlier. They also learnt to recognise quater past and quater to as well as half past. Next week they will write a short test which will include money and time.
In science we learnt about the changes of water when the temperature changes. The students got familiar with terms: freezing, melting, evaporation and condensation. Later we did a revision of properties of the 3 states of matter.
This week we had homophone spelling words. We worked on learning the definitions of these words, so that we can learn the spelling. We also worked on comprehension. We practiced forming the past tense of the verb “to be” and putting them correctly in sentences. We continued with our read aloud of The Boxcar Children.
Language Arts: Last week we focused on Y as a vowel. Y has two different vowel sounds like long i in the word “fly” or long e in the word “bunny”.
Math: In math we continued working on clocks and measurement. We also began to look at different graphs and how to read or record information on a picture graph.
Science: In science we started our unit on things in the sky. We began to talk about the moon and the sun and we will continue this week.
2nd grade continues their adventure with money. They name the coins, find different ways to make a given sum with coins, they solve word problems about money. They also learnt that $1= 100 cents. We played with fake money to show given sums and played shop keepers and clients to practise real life situations with money. The class also learnt to count the change if you give a bigger note than what you have to pay.
In science we still revise the 3 states of matter. There was also an experiment well little scientists checked which solids dissolve in water and which don’t. On Earth Day we learnt about pollution and made a poster: Give Earth a helping hand.
This week we had spelling words that reviewed past weeks’ rules. We worked on comprehension in poems and in a dictionary. We started a new read aloud of the book The Boxcar Children.
