Students wrote a story in their journal that incorporated at least 5 of their spelling words. We worked on our comprehension  of an information text with tables. We also worked on identifying adverbs and knowing the difference between an adverb and adjective.

Math

This week we were learning how to subtract money; solving word problems and checking answers using inverse operations; and bar graphs. By the end of the week, students took test from unit 1. The results were excellent! – Much better than I expected! I highly appreciate my 4thgrade students! Great job – and hope they will maintain the same throughout this year.

September 19th-23rd

English

In English students learnt about narrative writing. They prepared drafts of the story and compared and contrasted characters. Later on they analized different types of sentences: statements, questions, commands and exclamatory questions.

Math

In math we worked on some complex word problems which combined addition and multiplication. We also did a little revision of place value. The students learnt to round to the nearest hundred. Finally we entered the topic of multiplication as a repeated addition.

Science

In science we talked about measuring matter, what different aspects of matter can we measure? What tools and units do we use for mass, length, temperature, volume and time? The students could play with and learnt to use magnifying glasses, microscopes and balance pans.

Language Arts: In Language arts we worked on narrative writing. We planned and wrote true stories from our lives using many details. We also read a few stories and discussed Author’s Purpose and reviewed Sequence of Events through retelling each story. In grammar we worked on the four different types of sentences: statement, command, exclamatory, and question.

Math: In math we worked on addition and subtraction within 20. We filled in magic mountains with addition math facts. They also worked on sudoku squares.

Science: In Science we discussed various different science tools that scientists use and we conducted another experiment using food coloring and salt water.
