There was a lot of excitement this week as we prepared for our Halloween Festival on Thursday! Our door is decorated like a Monster. Some students have made decorations to hang up in our class. Everything is looking spooky and festive. Though we still had important work to do!
In Language Arts, we wrote a sequence story together using transition words “First, Next, Then, Last”. We practiced retelling Room on the Broom using picture cues. We will continue practicing retelling strategies throughout November. We took our Spelling test, focusing on words with the short /u/ sound.
We did a STEM task challenge where the students needed to create a balance scale using a cup, playdough, a pencil, and a ruler. Then they had to balance the characters from Room on the Broom on their scale – which acted a witch’s broom! The students enjoyed the challenge and had a lot of fun retelling the story with the characters. Afterwards we reflected on what went well and what was hard during our STEM challenge. We tied it back to our Social Studies unit, thinking about how we can best cooperate.
In Math, we finished Unit 2 and took our Math Test which focused on finding missing numbers, finding one more and one less, number bonds and part-part-whole with sums up to 10 and making number sentences for addition facts up to 10.
Language Arts- In Language arts we finished our unit on cause and effect. We worked on plural nouns and special rules to remember when making nouns plural. We continued working on our personal narratives.
Math: In math we have been working on addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. We have been working together to play jeopardy and math games.
Science: In science we began our unit on animals. We reviewed the needs of animals in order to survive and differences between different animals within those needs.
We also completed our Halloween Door together!
English: In English, we have been working with the sound e, and learning concept words (chore, clean, cook, inside, outside, work).
Science: In Science, We have been talking about good nutrition and personal safety.
Social studies: In Social Studies, we have been talking about how families are the same and different.
Math: In math, we have been counting numbers 1-10 and making up to 4 and subtracting 1 from 4
As always have a great week
In Language Arts, In Language Arts we read Room on the Broom identifying words with sounds /-at/ and /-og/. In Jolly Phonics we focused on words that use /ai/ to make a long /a/ sound. At Literacy Stations we talked about sequencing, using transition words “first, next, then, last, or finally” to mark the order of events. On Friday, we took our Spelling test, which focused on word with short /o/ sound.
In Math, we focused on addition within 10. We worked in our Math Stations to make number bonds and part-part-total. We practiced identifying numbers using dots, learning the way in which dots are arranged to show numbers 1-10, as on dice or on dominoes. We marked our 40th day of school and played Broken Magic Wand – a game in which a wand of 40 cubes breaks and we notate the groups on ten-frames. On Thursday, we began ‘Mystery Math’, a story problem math routine that requires students to work through the same story problem with four different sets of numbers. We focused on the mathematical practice, “Make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it”.
In Social Studies, we discussed responsibilities that we have at home and at school.
